Working Together

Dear Prospective Client,

Here’s a little about my philosophy and approach to counseling, spirituality and creativity to help you discern if we might be a right fit for working together.

Philosophy: I believe that everyone has an interior core self—a wholeness within—that sometimes gets buried under layers of challenges in life. In my work, I seek to help you, the client, become the captain of your own journey as you learn to navigate these challenges, and reconnect with your core self.  My approach is collaborative; I work alongside and with you to foster safety that promotes curiosity about who you want to be and how to make that happen.

Approach: I see my work as a tapestry that weaves together the various threads of counseling, spirituality and creative expression.  The healing thread I choose depends upon your interests and goals.

I appreciate the time you have taken to read about my philosophy and approach. I look forward to hearing from you! Sarah

Below are descriptions and original depictions of the different threads I am able to offer.

Counseling

As counselor, I seek to help you foster qualities of self; including self-awareness, self-advocacy, and self-compassion.  And as it arises, humor and play can be helps in creating wiggle room for larger, more balanced perspective.  I bring a narrative world view to the work in that I believe that we all have a storyline we carry with us wherever we go.  What we have the power to change is the lens through which we make meaning out of that storyline.  I will work with you to name any interpretations that no longer serve, and to discover more helpful ways of making meaning.

Expressive Arts Therapy

As expressive arts therapist, I explore with you the metaphor of creative practice as the process of living life as an artistic endeavor.  The focus of this work is never to create a product, but to cultivate the patience and courage to show up, engage with, and stay through times of messiness, in order to emerge with new insight, awareness, and self-compassion.

Spiritual Direction

As spiritual director, I listen for how your sense of the Holy is at work in your life.  I am able to suggest prayer and meditation practices that support your unfolding spiritual journey.  I accompany you during those times when mystery is larger than the ability to understand, and when there is no easy answer.  I help you remember that meaning making often comes with hindsight.
